land acknowledgment

At La House, we are proud to be based in Lawrence, MA. The vibrant, textured community we have found here has been pivotal to our journey and we are inspired endlessly by the stories of our city. In the spirit of honoring the land on which we live and work, we’d like to acknowledge the spiritual and physical connection the Pennacook, Abenaki, and Wabanaki Peoples have maintained to N’dakinna, the land upon which Lawrence sits.

The greater Lawrence area was once a major Pennacook settlement along the Merrimack River (Mol8demak – “deep water”). The Aln8bak, the Indigenous original human beings, ask you to acknowledge the hardships that they continued to endure for countless generations after the loss of their unceded homelands. They seek your help to foster relationships and opportunities that strengthen the well-being of all living things as we all carry forward the stewardship traditions of their Indigenous ancestors.

mission

La House is home to a collective of creatives, healers, and cultural workers dedicated to holding safe spaces for people to reclaim their creativity as an innate gift.

We endeavor to help individuals and communities to tap into their creative spark as a path toward healing, transformation, and growth.

vision

We believe that everyone is born creative, and that the many ways in which we experience systemic injustice disconnects us from ourselves, our community, and our creativity. Lived experiences with racism, homophobia, sexism, classism, ableism, and other forms of oppression result in creative trauma. La House serves to help us in returning home to ourselves.

At La House, we hold safe spaces* for people to reclaim their creative gifts. We believe in the power of having access to artistic space, material, and tools to foster creative agency and strengthen our creative community.

*More than just a buzzword, our working definition of safety is achieved through:

  • Creating a felt sense of accountability for all through community-building

  • Setting agreements for what is appropriate behavior in the space

  • Responding to harm with practices of transformative justice

  • Meeting folks where they are at creatively

We realize that the safety of a space is decided by those who inhabit it, and that we will never be able to prescribe a space as safe from every harm in every way in every moment. Notwithstanding, we work tirelessly to ensure safety for our community members.
